The Southwood boys and girls basketball teams headed west to North Miami Friday to take part in a girl-boy double header, coming away with two wins. The Lady Knights got off to a good start and never let go, defeating the Lady Warriors 47-34. The boys were up next with the Knights coming out on fire, scoring the first 10 points of the game and 18 of the first 19 in an 85-35 win.
North Miami took the lead 2-0 on an Adria Hartley bucket before Brooke Elliott and Kassidy Atwood made it 4-2. Southwood would extend their lead to 8-3 off a three from Taylor Heath and a bucket from Elliott before a Ashley Lefebvre made it 8-5. Lefebvre would cut the Knight lead to 10-7 with another bucket before an Elloitt three and a deuce made it 16-7 after one.
Sammy Tims would get the first bucket of the second quarter, when the Knights increased their lead on a Heath three that was followed by an Ashley Parson three to make it 22-12. North Miami would respond to the Southwood long ball with buckets from Tims, Cailyn Bolser and Emmy Grant to make it 22-18 before Makenna Dawes hit a shot at the buzzer to give the Knights a 24-18 lead at the half.
Two early buckets from Adria Hartley in the third cut the Knight lead to 26-22 when Parson hit from long range again, followed by an Elliott bucket to make it 31-22. The Warriors kept coming back, getting buckets from Tims to make it 32-26 when Atwood hit, followed by Parson hitting her third three of the game with 3 seconds left to give Southwood a 36-26 lead after three.
The Knights would extend their lead to start the fourth off two Heath free throws and a bucket from Elliott to make it 40-26 when once again the Warriors would respond. Adria Hartley hit three straight buckets, followed by a Bolser bucket to cut the lead to 40-33. Dawes would make it 42-33 with free throws as the Knights went on a 7-1 run to end the game 47-36.
Brooke Elliott led the team in scoring with 16 points, on 7-11 from the field, grabbed, 6 rebounds, dished out 2 assists ,made 2 steals and 2 blocked shots. Taylor Heath scored 10 points while garnering 4 assists, making 2 steals and blocking a shot. Ashley Parson knocked down 3-3’s, for 9 points and also had 2 assists, Kassidy Atwood added 6 points and grabbed a team leading 7 rebounds. Makenna Dawes scored 4 points, dished out 3 assists but made her biggest contributions on defense with 5 steals and 9 pass deflections.
The boys game was decided the first 5 minutes as the Knights scored the first 10 points of the game. Payton Trexler scored 6 points during the run with Matthew Nose hitting a three and Brandin Frazier a bucket. After a North Miami free throw the Knights would go on an 8-0 run that was aided by two Nose three’s to lead 18-1.The Knights would continue their heavy full court pressure and led 28-11 after one that was highlighted by an Alex Harmon dunk.
Things would be much of the same in the second as Southwood started the quarter on a 14-0 run to increase their lead to 42-11. Again it was Trexler leading the way with Harmon getting in on the action, scoring on an ally oop as the Knights rolled to a 53-19 halftime lead.
Harmon would dominate the third quarter with Carson Blair starting to warm up as the Knights started the quarter on a 15-2 run and led 68-21. The last 4 points of the quarter were scored by Blair, including a buzzer beater to lead 74-26 before going on to the 85-35 win.
Leading the Knights was Peyton Trexler with 19 points. Alex Harmon added 17, Matthew Nose 12, Brandin Frazier 11, Carson Blair 11, Blake Martz 6, Dallas Holmes 4, Jeffery Finicle 3, Christian Deeter 2.
