County Teams Fall Out Of Girls Sectional

It was semi final night at the Rochester girls basketball sectional Friday which meant one thing, win and you are in the championship. The Wabash Lady Apaches were making their first appearance in the tournament as they had drawn the bye, taking on Oak Hill in game one. In game two the Southwood Lady Knights were coming off a first round win over Lewis Cass and had the task of playing #2 Rochester on their home floor.

Two quarters did the Lady Apaches in as they led after one before scoring 2 points in the second and 2 in the third before a fourth quarter comeback fell short in a 41-37 loss to Oak Hill. In game two Rochester scored the first 9 points of the game and led Southwood 15-3 after the first quarter in route to a 50-32 win over the Knights.

In game one Wabash got the good start, getting buckets from Bailey Toakum, Katie McCauley, Jaycee Parrett and Sabrina Wagner to lead 10-2 before Oak Hill scored 4 straight. Parrett would score the last points of the quarter as Wabash led 10-7.

Leading 12-7 in the second things went south for the Apaches as the Eagles scored 9 straight to end the quarter and led 18-12 at the half. Things didn’t get any better for Wabash in the third as they didn’t score until McCauley hot with 3:00 left in the quarter, again scoring just 2 points and trailed 23-14 with a quarter to go.

Things were looking slim for the Apaches in the fourth as they trailed 29-19 with 5:00 to play when they started to chip away. A three point play by Madison Barden and two Kristin Cromer free throws made it 29-21 with 4:28 left. A Barden free throw and two more from Cromer cut the deficit to 30-24 with 3:13 to play and it was 37-31 with a minute left. The Apaches would foul, but the Eagles answered at the line, defeating Wabash 41-37.

Leading Wabash was Kristin Cromer and Madison Barden with 7 points each. Jaycee Parrett added 6, Bailey Yoakum 6, Katie McCauley 6, Sabrina Wagner 5.


In game two Rochester jumped on the Knights right away, scoring the first 9 points of the game before a Brooke Elliott bucket. Kassidy Atwood would hit a free throw for Southwood as the Knights trailed 15-3 after one.

The Lady Knights were out scored 13-4 in the second with Elliott scoring all 4 points off free throws. Southwood trailed 28-7 at the half.

The Knights would find the bucket a little more often in the third. Trailing 33-7 Taylor Heath would drain a three and the Knights got a three point play from Elliott to make it 33-13. Down 40-15 Elliott would hit before an Ashley Parson free throw and a bucket from Heath and trailed 42-20 after three.

Southwood got buckets from Heath, Elliott and Atwood early in the fourth to cut the Rochester lead to 46-26 and played even with the Zebras until Morgan Farr hit 4 free throws to get the deficit under 20 at 49-32 before falling 50-32.

Leading Southwood was Brooke Elliott with 15 points. Taylor Heath added 7, Morgan Farr 4, Kassidy Atwood 5, Ashley Parson 1.
