The Southwood boys basketball team traveled to Madison Grant Thursday, building a first quarter lead before holding off the Argylls in the fourth for a 68-59 win.
Madison Grant jumped out to a 4-0 lead before a Peyton Trexler three made it 4-3. Down 5-3 Carson Blair would tie the score before Trexler hit his second three to give the Knights an 8-7 lead. The Trexler three started a 10-0 run by the Knights. Trexler would follow his three with a bucket which was backed with a bucket from Brandin Frazier and a three from Blair to grab a 15-7 lead. The Knights led 17-11 after two Frazier free throws when the Argylls scored 5 straight to close the gap to 17-16. Blake Martz would stop the run with a bucket, but the Argylls get coming and tied the score at 19 before a Blair three. Southwood led 22-21 after one.
Martz would get the first point of the second quarter for a 23-21 lead when Madison Grant hit two straight to go up 25-23. Frazier would trade buckets with the host before the Argylls scored 4 straight and led 31-26. The Knights would quickly answer as Frazier and Alex Harmon hit back to back, followed by a Trexler three point play to go back up 33-31. At 33-32 Trexler would score off a steal with Harmon getting the last bucket of the quarter for a 37-32 halftime lead.
Madison Grant would score the first 4 points of the third quarter to cut the Knight lead to 37-36 before a Trexler three made it 40-36. The game would then be tied three times before Blair connected on a floater that was followed by a Matthew Nose bucket and a 48-44 lead with a quarter to go.
The Argylls would hit a three to start the fourth quarter and cut the Knight lead to 48-47 when Blair connected. Another Argyll three made it 50-50 before Blake Martz answered with a three to lead 53-50. At 53-51 Carson Blair would hit Trexler for an ally oop to grab a 55-51 lead. At 55-53 the Knights would make a move. Brandin Frazier converted a three point play that was followed by an Alex Harmon offensive rebound bucket to put Southwood up 60-53. The Argylls got as close as 64-59 before a Trexler bucket with 24 seconds left and two Blair free throws put the game away for the 68-59 win.
Leading the Knights was Peyton Trexler with 24 points. Brandin Frazier added 16, Carson Blair 14, Blake Martz 6, Alex Harmon 6, Matthew Nose 2.
The Southwood junior varsity defeated Madison Grant 51-33.
After struggling defensively by giving up 21 points in the first half, the JV Knights outscored the Argylls 14-3 in the 3rd quarter and won the game.
The Knights were led by Dallas Holmes with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists. Paul Farlow had 11 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Payton Ensor had 8 points, 5 blocks and 4 rebounds. Ethan Roberts added 5 points 6 assists and 3 steals. Luke Winer had 5 points and 2 assists. Quentin Perry and Colby Crow added 3 points a piece and Austin Haynes had 3 steals.
The Knights host Maconaquah in a key TRC match up Friday. Southwood is 7-0 in the TRC with Maconaquah coming in at 6-1.
