The Southwood boys basketball team had one mission on their mind when they stepped on the floor Friday and that was to beat the Maconaquah Braves and clinch the TRC title. For two quarters Maconaquah gave the Knights all they wanted until a 13-2 third quarter run and a 60 foot buzzer beater by Carson Blair ignited the Knights to a 79-67 win.
Alex Harmon started the scoring off an offensive rebound before Wyatt Hughes hit a three to give the Braves a 3-2 lead. Peyton Trexler and Chandler Pitts would trade buckets for a 5-4 score when Carson Blair and Harmon hot back to back to give Southwood an 8-5 lead. With the Knights leading 12-9 Hughes would hit a bucket and two free throws, followed by a Pitts bucket to out the Braves up 15-12. Back came the Knights with Harmon and Brandin Frazier hitting for a 16-15 Southwood lead when Luke Hann gave the lead back to Maconaquah. With Southwood up 18-16 Hann would hit before the buzzer as the game was tied 18-18 after one.
Maconaquah would score the first four points of the second quarter off buckets from Blake May and Pitts before the Knights come back to tie the score at 24. Again it would be May with a bucket, plus two Hughes free throws for a 28-24 Braves lead when Matthew Nose drained a three for a 28-27 score. Pitts would hit to make it 30-27. Two Blake Martz free throws and a bucket from Harmon gave Southwood a 31-30 lead before Ethan Larason hit before the buzzer as Maconaquah led 32-31.
The Knights would come out on fire to start the third quarter. Peyton Trexler would score off a steal that was answered by a Pitts three to give the Braves a 35-33 lead when things changed. Carson Blair would hit two straight three pointers that was followed with a bucket from Frazier to give Southwood a 41-35 lead before another Pitts bucket. The Knights would then get a bucket from Trexler, an offensive rebound bucket from Harmon and a second Trexler bucket off a Blair steal to increase the Southwood lead to 46-37. Hughes would stop the run with two free throws, while the Braves started to chip away at the Knights lead, getting it to 54-48 when Blair hit his 60 footer for a 57-48 score.
The Knights would build off the third quarter ending, increasing their lead to 66-50. The Braves would get no closer than 68-57 before the Knights went on to clinch the TRC 79-67.
