The Wabash boys basketball team was looking for their second win this week and second in a row as they played host to Blackford on senior night Saturday. After a shaky start the Apaches got things going to defeat the Bruins 49-27.
Marcus Jones scored for Wabash off the opening tip before Blackford would answer with 8 straight points. Jones would stop the Bruin run with his second bucket and was followed by a Taylor Vigar bucket off a steal and two Luke Mattern buckets off Kaleb Kelshiemer steals to score the last 8 points of the quarter and lead 10-8 after one.
The momentum kept going for Wabash to start the second quarter. Austin Vinopal connected before a Kelshiemer steal for a bucket and a Jones free throw to increase their lead to 15-8. Leading 15-9 Jones would score three more points to make it 18-9. Taylor Vigar would then score two buckets, one off an offensive rebound to make it 21-11 before Blackford ended the quarter with a bucket as Wabash led 21-13 at the half.
Jones and Vigar would score early for the Apaches in the third and led 25-16 when Jones hit off a rebound and Mattern scored off another Kelshiemer steal before two more Jones free throws made it 31-16. Wabash led 31-18 after three.
The Apaches would double up on Blackford in the fourth, winning the quarter 18-9. Vigar and Eryk Weber would hit before two Vinopal buckets made it 39-20. At 42-24 Austin Hostetler scored off an offensive rebound, then drained a three to cap off the night as the Apaches rolled 49-27.
Leading the Apaches was Marcus Jones with 14 points. Taylor Vigar added 11, Luke Mattern 6, Austin Vinopal 6, Austin Hostetler 5, Owen Yeadon 3, Kaleb Kelshiemer 2, Eryk Weber 2.
The Wabash junior varsity defeated Blackford 50-30.
Leading Wabash was Blake Gribben with 17 points. Matt Jones added 9, Brandon Easterday 8, Austin Wieland 6, Matthew Stein 2, Cal Stone 2, Christian Simpson 2, Austin Black 2, Devin Higdon 2.
