The Northfield basketball team needed a big win before sectional play begins in a week and got that win Tuesday when they upset Huntington 58-54.
After falling behind 2-0 to start the game, two Noah Shear free throws and an Austin Trump three gave the Norse a 5-2 lead. The Vikings would tie the score at 6 when Shear drained a three, then got another three from Joe Halderman to lead 12-8. Huntington would then score 6 straight to grab a 14-12 lead, but back came the Norse, getting a bucket from Cody Holmes before Shear was fouled on a three point shot with 0.3 on the clock, hitting two free throws for a 16-14 lead after one.
The Norse would continue their momentum to start the second when Kyle Reed converted a three point play, then hit a second bucket off a hustle play from Holmes to go up 21-14. Huntington would close the gap to 21-18 before Reed hit again to make it 23-18 when the Vikings converted a three point play. The Norse led 25-21 after a Shear bucket when Huntington went on an 8-0 run to grab a 29-25 lead. Ryan Driscoll would then bury a long ball before two Viking free throws ended the scoring for the quarter with Huntington leading 31-28 at the half.
Holmes and Reed would trade buckets with the Vikings early in the third. With the Norse trailing 35-31 Jake Schuler got in on the three point barrage and was followed by a Shear bucket to give Northfield a 36-35 lead. The Vikings would respond, out scoring the Norse 8-2 to grab a 43-38 lead when Driscoll scored off a steal. Huntington would end the quarter with a free throw and led 44-40 with a quarter to go.
Huntington would extend their lead to 46-40 to start the fourth, but instead of folding the Norse got busy. Noah Shear would score, followed by a Reed score off a Trump steal to cut the deficit to 46-44 before Driscoll hit his second three to give Northfield a 47-46 lead. Huntington would answer with 4 straight to go back up 50-47 when Holmes started a 7-0 run. After the Holmes bucket Shear would hit a long three, followed by another Holmes bucket to go back up 54-50 with 1:20 left. Huntington would cut the lead to 54-52 then get a steal before missing the shot attempt and fouling with 11.7 left. Noah Shear would hit both ends of the one and one for a 56-52 lead before the Vikings came down and scored, then fouled Shear again with 6.7 remaining. Again Shear would sink both free throws for a 58-54 lead with the Vikings missing their final shot in the 58-54 upset.
