The Northfield baseball team defended home tuft Saturday, defeating Fremont in a double header 9-8 and 7-6.
In game one Fremont would score 2 runs in the first before the Norse got one back in the bottom of the inning. Jarred Short would draw a walk and move to second and third on wild pitches during a Dylan Brown walk. Drake Richter would then walk to load the bases before a Jakob Hayes walk forced home a run.
The Norse would take the lead in the third. With one out Richter would walk, followed by a Hayes single to put runners on the corners. With two outs Jared Vigar would double home both runners for a 3-2 lead.
Fremont would tie the score in the top of the fourth before the Norse got the run back in the bottom. With one out Matt Coe would single before a two out Brown triple drove him home for a 4-3 lead.
The Fremont bats would get hot in the fifth, scoring 4 times to grab a 7-4 lead and held the Norse off until a two out rally in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs Coe would single and was followed by Short being hit by a pitch. Brown would then draw a walk to load the bases when a Richter single scored Coe and Short to make it 7-6. Hayes would then single home Brown to tie the score before a Monce single drove home Richter to lead 8-7.
Fremont would come back to tie the game in the top of the seventh and forced extra innings. Tied at 8 in the bottom of the eighth Short would lead off with a double before a Brown single put runners on first and third. Richter would be intentionally walked to load the bases for a force before a Monce fly ball scored Short for the 9-8 win.
Game two was just as exciting as game one and took just as many innings. Northfield would go up 2-0 in the first when Short led off with a single before Brown reached on an error, scoring Short. After a Richter walk a Hayes sac fly scored Brown for the 2-0 lead.
Fremont would score 3 runs in the top of the third to grab a 3-2 lead before the Norse answered with 2 runs of their own. Hayes would lead off reaching on an error and scored in a Coe double to tie the score. Mason Hovey would then hit a bloop single with Coe having to hold up at second before Sam Burcroff reached on an error to load the bases. Jackson Beery would then reach on a fielders choice with Coe scoring. Hovey would then score on another Fremont error to give the Norse a 5-3 lead.
Fremont would answer with 2 runs in the top of the fourth to tie the score before a Short walk, Brown single put Short on third before he stole home for a 6-5 lead.
Fremont would score a lone run in the sixth to tie the score once more and again the game headed to the bottom of the eighth. Beery would lead off drawing a walk and advanced to second when Short reached on an error. Both runners would advance a base on a balk before Brown was intentionally walked to load the bases. Richter would the draw a walk off walk for the 7-6 win.
