The Northfield and Wabash softball teams opened the Oak Hill sectional Monday with Northfield pitcher Paige Holley holding the Apaches to just two hits and striking out 10 while the Lady Norse collected 11 hits in a 7-2 Northfield win.
Northfield got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Breanna Burcroff led off with a single before advancing to second on the throw and third on a passed ball. With one out Ashey Koch would hit a grounder to the right side, driving home Burcroff to lead 1-0.
Wabash would grab the lead in the top of the second. Erica King led off with a single and was followed by a Tabby Wagner single. With two outs Bre Sewell would reach on a Norse error with King and Wagner scoring to grab a 2-1 lead. The Norse wasted no time responding when Kiana Kendall stroked a double but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. Holley would then double and was ran for by Kelsie Thomson. Thomson would advance to third on a wild pitch before an Ally Keaffaber walk set up. With two on Abby Keaffaber launched a shot over the left field fence to put the Norse back up 4-2.
Northfield would stretch their lead in the fifth. Abby Keaffaber led off with a walk with courtesy runner Abbey Ross taking her place. Burcroff would then hit a grounder with Ross being forced out at second. Jordan Shafer then drew a walk with both runners advancing a base on a wild pitch. Koch then singled home Burcroff and Shafer for a 6-2 lead.
The last run of the game came in the Northfield sixth. With one out Kendall would walk and take second on a wild pitch. Holley then singled home Kendall for the 7-2 score.
