There was a shoot out at Sheman Wagner Field Friday as the Southwood Knights scored with .08 left on the clock to grab a 43-40 win over LaVille to win the sectional championship.
The Lancers came into the game as the favorites, falling just one time during the regular season and wasted no time silencing the Southwood crown. LaVille would take the opening kick off and score on a 59yd run with 10:27 still on the clock to grab a 6-0 lead. The Lancers would then attempt a squib kick that the Knights recovered, marching down the field and scoring on a 3yd Matt Cox run with 7:37 left to take the lead 7-6 after the Parker Mays kick. The Southwood defense would then hold, but the Lancer defense would answer, picking off Carson Blair and taking the ball back to the Southwood 10. LaVille would then score with 2:28 left on a 3yd run and convert a two point conversion to lead 14-7. Not to be out done, Blair would connect with Peyton Trexler for a 65yd scoring pass with 1:37 left in the quarter to tie the game at 14. Again LaVille would get a good run back, taking the kick off back to the Southwood 27 when the quarter ran out.
With 11:06 on the clock in the second quarter LaVille would find the end zone on a 20yd run to take the lead at 21-14, then score again with 8:27 left on a 58yd run to increase their lead to 27-14. The Knight offense would then take over, stalling on three plays and were forced to punt, which they faked and drew a pass interference call to keep the ball. Blair would then make the Lancers pay for their mistake, scrambling for his life and finding Zach Ball in the end zone from 6yds out with 4:25 left to cut the deficit to 21-27. It looked as though LaVille might score one more time before the half when Blair picked off a pass in the end zone as the Knights trailed 21-27 at the half.
The Knights had the ball to start the third quarter, but was immediately intercepted. LaVille would take advantage of the Knights miscue, scoring on a 15yd run with 8:52 left to lead 21-33. The Knights needed a score before the quarter ended and got just that when again Blair was scrambling and found Ball in the left corner of the end zone from 12yds out with 7:48 on the clock to cut the deficit to 28-33 with a quarter to go.
The Knights made some noise early in the fourth when Blair connected with Trexler from 33yds out with 11:47 on the clock to grab a 36-33 lead. the Lancers would answer the call, scoring from 1yd out with 4:13 left to take the lead back 36-40. With time running out the Knights needed a score with just the opposite happening, going four and out and things looking bleak. LaVille had the ball on the Southwood 16 and would keep the ball on the ground, grinding the clock and looking to score with just over a minute to go when the break came. LaVille would fumble on the one with the Knights recovering in the end zone, giving them the ball on the 20 with 1:18 left in the game. Not having time to call plays from the sideline, Carson Blair would call the shots, using his arm and guiding the Knights down the field in a hurry. Clock management was ran to a tee, as the receivers would catch and head out of bounds. With 6 seconds on the clock the Knights had one, maybe two shots at the end zone to win the game. One shot would be all they needed as Blair scrambled to his right, finding Blake Martz streaking across the back of the end zone, hitting Martz between the numbers with .08 on the clock. The Mays extra point made it 43-40 with just the kick off remaining to pull off the shocker. A squib kick was in order that Mays executed perfect with time running out for the 43-40 thriller to win the sectional championship.
