The Northfield girls basketball team opened their season Tuesday hosting Western, defeating the Panthers 65-42.
After falling behind 1-0 the Lady Norse got busy, getting a bucket from Ally Keaffaber that started an 11-0 run. Jacklyn Peas would get a bucket and a three point play while Abbey Ross and Kelcie Thomson had buckets during the run. Thomson would hit two more free throws as the Norse led 13-5 after one.
Northfield was leading 15-9 in the second quarter when another run opened a gap. Melanie Beery would score off an offensive rebound and was followed by 5 straight points from Thomson to go up 22-9. At 22-11 Ross would connect, followed by two Hope Unger free throws to make it 26-11. With the score 26-14 Thomson would drain a three that was followed by another Beery offensive rebound bucket to lead 31-14 at the half.
The two teams would play even early in the third as the Norse led 38-22 when they went running again. Keaffber and Ariel dale would hit back to back buckets before two Peas free throws and a Thomson bucket off a steal to open a 45-25 lead. Peas got the last bucket of the quarter for the Norse as they led 47-30 with a quarter to go.
Thomson got the first bucket of the fourth quarter before Western went on a bit of a run, closing the gap to 54-39 before Beery and Dale took over, increasing the lead to 63-40 before the 65-42 final.
Kelsie Thomson led the way with 23 points. Ariel Dale and Jacklyn Peas added 11 points each. Melanie Beery added 7 points, Abbey Ross 6, Ally Keaffaber 5, Hope Unger 2.
Thomson added 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals. Dale added 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
The Northfield junior varsity defeated Western 40-15.
