The Southwood girls basketball team held their home opener Tuesday, giving state ranked Oak Hill a run before falling 47-40.
The Lady Knights got the first points of the game on a Brooke Elliott three pointer before Oak Hill got two free throws and a bucket from Adrianna Trexler, plus a bucket from Kaela Robey to lead 6-3. Ashley Parson would then tie the game with the Knights second long ball before Taylor Westgate put the Eagles back up. Southwood would then get a three from Taylor Heath that started an 8-0 run to give the Knights a 14-8 lead after one.
Jenessa Hasty would join the long ball club to start the second quarter to cut the Southwood lead to 14-11, then hit her second bomb a few seconds later to make it a Southwood 15-14 lead. The Knights would then get a free throw from Makenna Dawes and an Elliott three to get the Southwood lead to 19-14 when Westgate hit two free throws, plus the Eagles got a bucket from Hasty to make it 19-18. Dawes would then drain a three for a 22-18 Knights lead when Hasty hit from behind the arch for the third time in the quarter that was followed by a Westgate bucket, plus two free throws and a bucket from Auja Smith as the Eagles scored 9 straight and grabbed a 27-22 lead. Ashley Parson would end the long ball quarter with her second of the night as Oak Hill led 27-25 at the half.
As hot as the first half was, it was just the opposite in the third quarter. Brooke Elliott would hit to tie the score at 27, which would be the only Southwood points in the quarter. Although they scored just 6 points in the quarter, Oak Hill extended their lead off two Robey buckets and one from Hasty to lead 33-27 with a quarter to go.
Taylor Westgate would get the first point of the fourth quarter to make it 34-27 when Elliott hit, followed by a Parson three to cut the Oak Hill lead to 34-32. Again it would be Westgate scoring to stop a run and was followed by two Trexler free throws to make it 38-32. Back came Elliott to hit Southwood’s 8th home run of the game to make it 38-35. The Oak Hill height advantage would then take over as Hasty hit a free throw before missing the second that Westgate rebounded and put back in. Taylor Heath would keep the Knights close, grabbing a rebound off her own missed shot and hitting an acrobatic reverse while being fouled and converting a three point play to make it 41-38. The Eagles would continue to pound the ball inside, getting a free throw from Westgate and a bucket from Trexler to make it 44-38. Kassidy Atwood would cut the lead to 44-40 with 26.3 left on the clock. The Knights would foul with Hasty hitting both free throws, then get a bucket from Trexler to end the night 47-40.
