Three of the four Wabash County girls basketball team opened sectional play Wednesday at Northfield with Wabash and Manchester hooking up in game one. It was a two point game at the half before the Ladt Apaches used a 9-0 run in the third quarter and held on for a 42-36 win over the Squires.
The Lady Apaches grabbed a 2-0 lead on a bucket from Tabitha Wagner bucket before Cierra Carter hit three straight free throws for a 3-2 Manchester lead. Tied at 3-3 after a Carmen Higdon free throw Bailey Sewell and Kennedy Fierstos hit back to back to give the Squires a 7-3 lead before Jaycee Parrett ended the quarter with a bucket and Manchester leading 7-5.
Erika Kendall would hit two free throws to start the second quarter for a 9-5 lead when Wabash got hot. Bailey Yoakum would hit two free throws and was followed by a bucket from Abby Vinopal before Yoakum scored again. Parrett would then hit two free throws as Wabash led 13-9 before Ellie Milam hit twice from the charity stripe. With Wabash leading 15-11 Kendall would connect as Wabash led 15-13 at the half.
Cierra Carter would tie the score at 15 early in the third. With Wabash leading 17-16 the Apaches would make their run that ended up being the deciding factor. Jaycee Parrett would hit twice, followed by Yoakum and a three from Tristan Vigar to complete a 9-0 run that gave Wabash a 26-16 lead. Emma West would score off a steal for Manchester before the buzzer as the Apaches held a 26-18 lead with a quarter to go.
Jaycee Parrett would get the first bucket of the fourth quarter for a 10 point lead before Carter scored twice to make it 28-22. Wabash would respond with 6 straight, getting buckets from Yoakum and Sabrina Wagner for a 34-22 lead. Just as it looked as though the Apaches might run away the Squires found another gear. Erika Kendall would hit, followed by two Carter buckets and two free throws to cut the Wabash lead to 34-29 with 2:39 to play. The Squires started to foul and the Apaches converted free throws down the stretch to hold on for a 42-36 win.
In game two the Northfield Lady Norse fought early foul trouble and trailed by two points after the first quarter before gaining control in the second and going on to win 41-19.
Northfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead off a bucket from Ariel Dale and a free throw from Jacklyn Peas before going scoreless the remainder of the quarter and trailed 5-3 after one.
The Norse would get two free throws from Ally Keaffaber to start the second quarter and tie the score. Trailing 9-7 Northfield would finally start finding a groove. Dale would hit two free throws to tie the score at 9 before Melanie Beery put Northfield up. Keaffaber would then hit, followed by a Peas free throw and two from Dale to complete a 9-0 run and grab a 16-9 lead. Leading 16-11 Jacklyn Peas would steal the ball and race three quarter court for a lay up with 2.8 left as the Norse led 18-11 at the half.
Northfield would extend their lead early in the third when Dale hit two free throws, followed by a three pointer to open a 23-11 lead. Leading 23-13 Keaffaber would hit, followed by Peas and Kelcie Thompson grabbing a rebound and racing full court for a lay up to make it 29-13 after three.
Rochester would get the first bucket of the fourth quarter before a Beery free throw and two Dale free throws made it 32-15. Kelcie Thompson would then make the pass of the night, grabbing a defensive rebound and hitting Ally Keaffaber in full stride with a three quarter court pass for a lay up. Keaffaber would then hit again as the lead grew to 35-15. With Northfield up 35-19 Thompson would hit, followed by a jumper from Maddie Clark before Thompson hit the final bucket of the game for the 41-19 final.
