It was a night for overtime at Manchester Thursday as both game went extra innings. The junior varsity thriller kicked off the night with Manchester defeating Northfield 59-52 in two overtimes.
The varsity would resume where the junior varsity left off with Manchester grabbing a first quarter lead and clung to a one point lead heading to the fourth. Northfield would come back, taking a two point lead with seconds to go before David McAtee hit a runner at the buzzer to force overtime. The Squires would then out score the Norse by two in a 49-47 thriller.
David McAtee got the first bucket of the game before Kyle Reed tied the score. McAtee would come right back with a three before Cody Holmes scored off an offensive rebound to make it 5-4. Northfield would get a three from Joe Halderman to grab a 7-6 lead when McAtee and Mason Hamby both connected for a 10-7 Manchester lead. Ryan Driscoll would then tie the score with a long ball before Brayden Casper answered from behind the arch, followed by two McAtee free throws and a Devon Rooney three to put Manchester up 18-10. The Norse would score the final two buckets,one from Holmes and one from Reed at the buzzer as Manchester led 18-14 after one.
Cody Holmes would get the first bucket of the second quarter with Reed scoring right after to tie the score at 18 before Hamby put the Squires back up. Austin Trump would tie the score again and that was answered by Kam Lester for a 22-20 lead. The Norse would once again get back to back buckets from Holmes and Reed to grab a 24-22 lead before Koehl Fluke ended the quarter with a bucket and the game was tied 24-24 at the half.
The Squires would come out swinging to start the third, getting a three from Fluke and a three point play from Hamby to grab a 30-24 lead before Reed connected, followed by a Holmes free throw to make it 30-27. McAtee would then wrap two buckets around a Holmes bucket to make it 34-29 when Holmes scored, followed by two Reed free throws to make it 34-33. Fluke and Reed would trade buckets to end the quarter with Manchester leading 36-35 after three.
Northfield would score the first four points of the fourth behind Holmes and Reed to take a 39-36 lead before McAtee hit two free throws. Northfield led 42-40 with 1:43 left. Manchester would work the clock for a good shot, missing with 27.1 left and Northfield getting the rebound. The Squires would foul with Manchester racing down the floor and missing again, then fouling with 8.3 remaining. Again the Norse would miss with the Squires hustling down the floor and David McAtee hitting at the buzzer to force overtime at 42-42.
Manchester would score quickly in the OT off a Casper three to grab a 45-42 lead. Holmes would make it 45-44 on two free throws before the Norse grabbed a 46-45 lead on two Reed free throws with 1:59 left. McAtee would then give the Squires the lead back with a bucket before Holmes answered with 1:23 remaining. The Squires would elect to hold the ball and go for the win, getting a bucket from Hamby while being fouled. Hamby would miss the free throw to give the Norseone more shot with 6 seconds left. The Norse would race full court with Trump missing a shot, followed by missed tips from Holmes and Reed as the Squires held on for the 49-47 thriller.
