The Manchester boys basketball team has been turning their season around the last three weeks and Friday the kept the ball rolling as they defeated Peru 69-54.
The Squires jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Mason Hamby bucket that was answered by a three from Jeramiah Johnson to put Peru up 3-2. Hamby would hit again before Bailey Gardner hit back to back three’s to give the Tigers a 9-4 lead. Manchester would then answer with an 11-0 run that started with a Brayden Casper three, followed by a David McAtee three to put Manchester up 10-9. McAtee would then hit off a steal, following it up with a three point play for a 15-9 lead. Johnson would stop the run with a bucket before Hamby ended the quarter with two as Manchester led 17-11 after one.
Manchester would extend their lead to 20-11 off a Casper lead to start the second quarter before Christian Howell hit a free throw. Hamby would then make it 22-12 when Howell hit, followed by a tip in from Gardner to make it 24-16. With Manchester leading 30-18 after a Hamby bucket, Gardner would convert a three point play to make it 30-21. The Squires would finish the quarter with an Adam Byers free throw before McAtee hit right before the buzzer for a Manchester 33-21 halftime lead.
Jeremaih Johnson would get the first bucket of the third quarter that was answered by Hamby as the teams traded buckets until 37-26 when Gardner hit off a rebound and was followed by a Johnson bucket and a Jonah Lester free throw to cut the Squires lead to 37-31. Manchester would respond with an 8-0 run with Koehl Fluke hitting two straight three pointers, followed by a McAtee lay up off a steal to make it 45-31. Duante Majors would stop the run with two free throws before Fluke hit his third long ball of the quarter to make it 50-33. Gardner and Johnson would hit buckets around a McAtee bucket to finish the scoring in the quarter with Manchester leading 52-37 with a quarter to go.
Bailey Gardner hit the first bucket of the fourth quarter before a McAtee three and a bucket from Hamby made it 57-39 when Johnson and Gardner answered with back to back three’s to make it 57-45. Hamby would then score 4 straight before a Howell bucket made it 61-47. Fluke would hit two free throws with 2:24 left for a Manchester 63-47 lead when Johnson scored 5 straight to cut the lead to 63-52. At 65-54 Fluke and Hamby would hit free throws down the stretch as the Squires went on for the 69-54 win.
The Manchester junior varsity fell to Peru 39-36.
