The Maconaquah Braves came into Northfield Tuesday with the hopes of clinching at least a share of the TRC title, while the Norse of Northfield were looking to play the spoiler. The Norse would hang with the Braves the entire night, but couldn’t quite get over the hump as they fell to Maconaquah 62-57.
Maconaquah would get the first bucket of the game from Bryce Ward before Austin Trump put Northfield up 3-2. Chandler Pitts would then make it 4-3 before a Cody Holmes bucket and a Ryan Driscoll three gave Northfield an 8-4 lead. The Braves would answer with a 6-0 run off two buckets from Wyatt Hughes and one from Ward to grab a 10-8 lead before Kyle Reed tied the score. Hughes would then trade a three with a Reed bucket for a one point lead, then score the final points of the quarter to give Maconaquah a 16-12 lead after one.
Joe Halderman got the first bucket of the second quarter to make it 16-14 when Chandler Pitts converted a three point play for a Braves 19-14 lead. Ethan Larason would sandwich a bucket between two Holmes free throws and a Reed bucket to make it 21-19 when Hughes hit a bucket and a free throw, followed by a Robert Dunham three to put Maconaquah up 27-19. The Norse would fight back on the back of Holmes to get the score to 27-24 before Pitts and Holmes made it 29-26. Two Hughes free throws and a bucket from Trump gave the Braves a 31-28 lead at the half.
Ward would get the first bucket of the third quarter off a steal with Trump matching the steal to make it 33-30. The two teams would continue to pound the ball into the big boys as the Maconaquah lead was never more than 4 points until 43-39. Ethan Larason would then hit two free throws, followed by a bucket from Pitts to increase the Braves lead to 47-39 before Reed hit. At 49-41 Holmes would end the quarter with two free throws as Maconaquah led 49-43 with a quarter to go.
Chandler Pitts and Cody Holmes would each hit two free throws to start the fourth quarter before Larason and Ward hit back to back to make it 55-45. Just as it looked like the Braves might run away from the Norse, the tide turned when Northfield went on an 8-0 run. Ryan Driscoll would start the run with a bucket and was followed by a Reed bucket before Driscoll scored off a steal. Holmes would end the run with a bucket as the Maconaquah 10 point lead was cut to 55-53. Pitts would stop the run with a free throws before Reed hit to make it 56-55. With just over a minute left Hughes would connect, followed by a Pitts free throw with 53.7 left to make it 59-55. After a missed Norse attempt Larason would hit one free throw with 12.8 on the clock for a 60-55 score before Reed hit to make it 60-57. The Norse would foul one more time with Ward hitting both free throws for the 62-57 final.
Leading Northfield was Cody Holmes with 24 points. Kyle Reed added 17, Austin Trump 7, Ryan Driscoll 7, Joe Halderman 2.
