The Southwood Knights had a lot on the line Friday. A win over county rival Northfield would mean a piece of the TRC title and the Norse didn’t make it easy. After playing to a tie in the first quarter the Norse dominated for the next quarter and a half before lightning struck the Knights sword. With Northfield up 49-33 midway through the third quarter the Knights would finish the quarter on a 14-2 run, then out score Northfield 27-6, including a 21-0 run in the fourth to grab a 74-57 win and a piece of the pie.
Austin Trump got the first bucket of the game before a Carson Blair three made it 3-2. The game was tied 6-6 when the Knights scored 6 straight on two Matt Nose free throws, followed by two Peyton Trexler buckets for a 12-6 Southwood lead. The Norse would answer with buckets from Holmes and Trump to make it 12-10 before Blair drained his second long ball. The Knights would build their lead to 20-12 off a third Blair three and buckets from Nose and Trexler when Northfield answered again. Kyle Reed would hit twice in a row with the second being a three point play, followed by a Ryan Driscoll bucket and a Reed free throw to make it 20-20 after one.
The two teams would duke it out early in the second with the Norse going low to Homes and the Knights getting another three from Blair and buckets from Trexler with the score being tied at 28. The Norse would then go on an 8-0 run with Holmes scoring three times and getting a bucket from Reed to lead 36-28. After a Trump bucket Northfield led 38-29 before a Trexler free throw and a free throw from Jeff Finicle made it 38-31 at the half.
Northfield came out swinging to start the third quarter, out scoring the Knights 11-1 early to build their lead to 49-33. That’s when the lightning struck. Carson Blair would hit two free throws that ignited an 11-0 run by the Knights to close the gap to 49-44 before a Holmes bucket made it 51-44. Blake Martz would get the last bucket of the third quarter which was a three to make it 51-47 after three.
Paul Farlow would hit a free throw to start the fourth quarter that was answered by a Holmes bucket to make it 53-48 before Nose connected, followed by a long three from Blair to tie the score at 53. The Norse would answer with buckets from Reed and Trump to give Northfield a 57-53 lead when the Knights went crazy. The Knights would score 21 straight points to end the game that was started by a Trexler bucket, followed by a Blair three. Five Knights scored during the run with Blair getting 10 in the quarter. Nose and Trexler each had 7.
