The Southwood and Northfield softball teams hooked up in a county rival game before spring break Tuesday. With the game tied at 3 after 3 the Lady Knights bats would go to work as they defeated the Norse 12-7.
After holding the Knights in the first the Norse would grab a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning. With one out Shelby Ward would draw a walk, steal second and advance to third on a wild pitch before an Ally Keaffaber fly ball drove Ward home for a 1-0 lead.
The Knights would answer in the second when Kayla Mays led off drawing a walk. With one out and Mays on second Makayla Proffitt would single to center with Mays advancing to third. Taylor Heath would then walk to load the bases. Mays would then score on a wild pitch to make it 1-1 before a Kassity Simpson single gave the Knights a 2-1 lead. Keagan Simpson would then walk to load the bases. With two outs after an infield fly. Brooke Elliott then reached on a dribbler in front of the plate with Heath scoring for a 3-1 lead. The Norse would come right back in the bottom of the inning to even the score. Michelle Hunt would draw a one out walk. With two outs Madison Shrider would walk before Kiana Kendall was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ward would then reach on an error that scored Hunt and Shrider to tie the score at 3.
The Knights would make some noise in the fourth when Heath led off being hit by a pitch. Heath would advance to second on a wild pitch and take third on a Kassity Simpson infield hit. With runners on second and third Keagan Simpson would lace a double to left, scoring both runners to take a 5-3 lead. Simpson would move to third on a Pace ground out before an Elliott grounder scored Simpson for a 6-3 lead. Northfield would get one run back in the bottom of the inning when Kendall drew a two out walk. Kendall would advance to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a Ward single to make it 6-4.
Southwood would come right back in the fifth with two runs. Proffitt would reach on an error and was followed by Hayley Bland drawing a walk. Kassity Simpson would advance the ruuners to second and third before a Keagan Simpson triple cleared the bases to make it 8-4.
With two outs in the sixth Taylor Heath would double and score on a Kassity Simpson double to make it 9-4.
In the seventh Pace would lead off with a single and was followed by an Elliott single to put runners on the corners. Kassidy Atwood would then reach on a dropped third strike with Pace scoring to make it 9-4. With runners on the corners Mays would drop down a bunt to load the bases. The Norse would then get a force at home before Atwood scored on a wild pitch. Mays would score the final run for the Knights on a Proffitt ground ball to second to make it 12-4. The Norse would rally in the bottom of the inning when Hunt led off with a single and was followed by an Olivia Taylor infield single. With one out Kendall would single to center, scoring Hunt and Taylor to make it 12-6. Kendall would score the last Norse run on a wild pitch as the Knights held on for the 12-7 win.
