The Southwood softball team pounded out 13 hits and grabbed a 5-0 lead at Tippecanoe Valley Monday before falling to the Vikings 12-11.
The Lady Knights picked up a run in the first when Makenna Pace hit a two out double and was drove home with a Brooke Elliott single.
After holding the Vikings in the first, the Knights would tack on 4 runs in the second. Makayla Proffit would hit a one out single. With two outs Kassity Simpson blasted a shot over the left field fence to give Southwood a 3-0 lead. Keagan Simpson then singled and was followed by a Pace single to put runners on first and third. Elliott then singled home Simpson and Pace to grab a 5-0 lead. Valley would come back in the bottom of the inning to score 3 times to make it 5-3, then get 2 more in the third to tie the score at 5.
In the fourth Kassity Simpson would draw a walk, followed by Keagan Simpson reaching on an error to move Kassity to third. Pace would the ground out with Simpson scoring to grab a 6-5 lead. An Elliott ground out scored the second Simpson to make it 7-5. Valley would get one of the runs back with the Knights clinging to a 7-6 lead.
Valley scored a run in the bottom of the 5th to make it 7-7 before the Knights took the lead again in the top of the sixth. Pace would lead off with a single and was followed by Elliott reaching on an error to chase Pace to third. Kassidy Atwood then grounded into a fielders choice to score Pace for an 8-7 lead. Tabitha Thomas then singled to score Elliott to lead 9-7 and was followed bya Kelsey Burhman sacrifice to score Atwood as the lead grew to 10-7.
Valley plated a run in the sixth to make it 10-8, then 2 more in the seventh to force extra innings. The Knights would geta run in the top of the eighth. With one out Olivia Adams would walk and take second on a ground out. Proffitt would then walk before Taylor Heath reached on an error to load the bases before Kassity Simpson drew a walk to force home Adams for an 11-10 lead. Valley would come back with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning for the 12-11 final.
