The Manchester softball team defeated Homestead on a walk off passed ball 8-7 Thursday. Manchester led 4-3 heading to the seventh with the exciting finish of David defeating Goliath.
Homestead would lead off the game with a home run and looked to threaten for another run by taking advantage of two Squire errors, with Manchester getting a ground out to get out of trouble. In the bottom of the inning Emma West would lead off with a single to left and was followed by a Brooklyn Howard bunt single. Cierra Carter would then ground out with West and Howard moving up a base. Kiera Stacy would then lay down the suicide squeeze with West racing home for the tying run.
Homestead would grab the lead again in the top of the third, taking advantage of two hit batters and a single to score a run for a 2-1 lead. Manchester would get the run back in the bottom of the inning when Howard hit a two out single and was followed by a Carter single. Stacy would then drive home her second run of the game with a single to right, scoring Howard to make it 2-2.
Homestead’s Parker would hit her second home run of the game in the top of the fourth, again with the Squires answering when Ellie Milam hit a shot over the center field fence to make it 3-3.
Homestead would put a runner on in the fifth with one out before Howard struck out the next batter. Sydney Day would then shoot down the runner trying to steal second to get out of the inning. Manchester would grab the lead in the bottom of the inning. Howard would lead off reaching on an error and was followed by a Carter single to chase Howard to third. Stacy would then fly out to center with Howard tagging up and scoring the go ahead run. Manchester led 4-3.
Both teams would go down in order in the sixth to set up the exciting seventh. Homestead would start the inning with a walk, a single and an error to load the bases with no outs before a strike out. Two straight singles would give the Spartans a 6-4 lead and were looking to blow the game open when right fielder Mattie McKee made a diving catch to help limit Homestead to just one more run. Manchester trailed 7-4 heading to the bottom of the inning. Howard would lead off the inning reaching on an error and was force out at second on a Carter ground ball. Stacy would then single to put runners on first and second before Day grounded out, moving the runners a base. With two outs Kennedy Fierstos would draw a walk to load the bases before Ranissa Shambarger did the same to force home Carter to make it 7-5. Erika Kendall would then hit a single up the middle with Stacy scoring to make it 7-6 with the bases still loaded. Mackenzie Day was up next, working the count and drawing a walk to force home Fierstos to tie the game before Shambarger raced home on a 2-2 count passed ball for the game winner as David came back to defeat Goliath 8-7.
