Freshman designated hitter Joe Gallatin (Muncie, Ind.) topped accolades for Manchester University on the 2017 all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference teams, released Tuesday, May 16.
Gallatin was tabbed the Freshman of the Year, the program’s fourth such honor all-time and first since 2012, by the league’s coaches after a sparkling campaign which saw him hit .358 with 54 hits, nine doubles, a triple, seven home runs and 46 RBI. He added a .570 slugging percentage and .396 on-base percentage to his slash line.
He was joined by senior center fielder Chad Schultz (Fair Oaks, Ind.) on the first team. Schultz, a two-time first team selection, had a breakout final collegiate season, hitting .335 with 58 hits, 21 doubles, two triples and eight home runs to go along with 41 RBI and a staggering .618 slugging percentage.
Coach Rick Espeset’s squad had four individuals on the second team. Sophomore right fielder Tyler LaFollette (Warsaw, Ind.); junior left fielder Eric Knepper (Bremen, Ind.); junior pitcher Brandon Eck (Fort Wayne, Ind.); and sophomore second baseman Christian Smith (Fortville, Ind.) represented the Black and Gold. It was the second second team award for LaFollette, while Eck earned his second overall all-league award after being an honorable mention pick as a sophomore.
Senior pitcher Cory Ferguson (Fort Wayne, Ind.), gaining his second overall all-loop award, was an honorable mention pick. Senior first baseman Tailur Szarenski (Bluffton, Ind.), winding up his career with four mentions on the all-conference honors, was placed on the Sportsmanship squad.
