After defeating North Miami in their sectional opener, the Northfield baseball team headed back to Tri County Monday to try and win a sectional title. The Norse got past North White 9-7 in their semi final before being shut out by South Newton in the championship 11-0.
In the semi final against North White Norse pitcher Blake Harner came out dealing and the Norse would reward him in the bottom of the first. Cole Rosen would lead off with a single before Braden Ripplinger reached on a sac bunt. With one out Jared Vigar would single home Rosen for a 1-0 lead. Matt Coe would follow with a single as Chance Hartman scored before a Blake Harner single made it 3-0 with Vigar scoring. Trevor Burnworth would follow with a ground out to second with Coe crossing the plate as the Norse led 4-0.
Northfield would extend their lead in the second when Mccauley Miller led off being hit by a pitch with Rosen advancing Miller to second, then scoring on an error to lead 5-0.
North White would plate a run in the third to make it 5-1, then tie the game in the top of the fourth before the Norse got going again. Sam Burcroff would lead off being hit by a pitch and was ran for by Adam Smalley. Miller would sacrifice Smalley to second before a Rosen single scored Smalley for a 6-5 lead. Ripplinger would then draw a walk before Rosen scored on an error by the catcher. Hartman followed with a fly to center that scored a tagging Ripplinger to make it 8-5.
The Norse would plate an insurance run in the sixth when Miller was hit by a pitch before being forced out at second on a Rosen grounder. Ripplinger would then ground into a fielders choice with both runners being safe before Rosen scored on an error to make it 9-5.
North White would make things interesting in the seventh with the Norse pulling off a double play to end the game. With a run across to make it 9-6 after a single, a double and a single North White had runners on the corners. After a steal of second North White would single with a run scoring. While trying to score a second run, Northfield center fielder Cole Rosen came up firing to get the runner in a rundown between home and third who would be tagged out by catcher Jacob Truman, who then fired to third, getting the batter who was trying to make it to third with Ripplinger making the tag to end the game.
In the championship game if it could go wrong it did. Starting pitcher Blake Harner struggled as South Newton scored 6 times in the first. South Newton ace Jay Hammel would dominate the Norse hitters, striking out 17 while allowing just one hit which was a double by Jared Vigar in the first inning.
South Newton would score 3 runs in the fourth and 2 in the sixth for the 11-0 final.
