The Southwood volleyball team played host to Peru Thursday, defeating the Tigers 25-21, 25-16, 25-22.
The Lady Knights got off to a good start in game one, getting kills from Kayla Mays and Drue Gentry to grab a 4-0 lead and were up 8-4 before Peru scored 6 of the next 7 points to take a 10-9 lead. The Tigers would maintain the lead until 16-14 when Alissa Pershing spiked one home that ignited a 5-0 run to give the Knights a 19-16 lead. Southwood would go to Maggie Ball and Mays down the stretch for the 25-21 win.
Peru would grab a quick 3-1 lead in game two when Pershing recorded a kill and a block as the Knights scored 7 of the next 8 to lead 8-4. Erin Lehner would make it 10-5 off a kill and an ace with Mays and Gentry getting in on the act to increase the lead to 15-8. Ball and Pershing would continue to control the net as the lead grew to 23-13 on the way to the 25-16 win.
Again the Knights would start slow in game three as Peru led 7-2 before Southwood got going. Two aces from Hayley Bland and a kill from Gentry put the Knights up 8-7 before the Tigers got it going again. Peru led 14-10 when Mays got hot with two kills, then handed the baton to Pershing who had three kills down the stretch for the 25-22 win.
