Spartans’ women’s soccer closes two-match home stand

It’s a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics – NCAA Division III clash Wednesday, Sept 6, as Rochester College of Michigan visits Manchester University’s Good Field.

Spartan Shorts: Senior midfielders Kelsey Ropp (Freeland, Mich.) and Courtney Hersick(Plymouth, Ind.) and junior defender/midfielder Isabella Zoog (Brownsburg, Ind.) have compiled the five MU points to date. Ropp, versus St. Mary’s, and Zoog, against Trine, deposited goals over the opening weekend, while Hersick had an assist on Ropp’s strike. Other top statistical numbers for the team include 13 total shots from junior midfielder/forward Maranda Birmingham (Kouts, Ind.); four shots on goal apiece for Birmingham and senior forward Delanie Jones (Madison, Ind.); and 14 saves for junior goalkeeper Caroline Smith (Mason, Ohio) … Birmingham, Hersick and Smith’s numbers have them ranked among the HCAC’s top five in the early going. Birmingham tops the shots list, while Hersick is one of seven players with an assist, and Smith’s save total is fourth-highest … Despite the tough start, Beal has seen encouraging signs from the Spartans. “We still need to work on communication (around the pitch),” she said. “However, you can see from time to time that we’re getting it put together, especially on offense … we’re moving the ball well to feet and finding shots.”
