Manchester University looks to build off the momentum of going 2-0 at its portion of the annual Anderson University-MU Raven-Spartan Classic with a mid-week road matinee.
Match details: Kickoff between the Spartans (3-1) and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ member Huntington University (2-1-2) is 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13. It’s scheduled for HU’s soccer field located directly behind the Merillat Complex.
Spartan Shorts: Coach Corey Brueggeman’s side finds itself ranked among the top five of three Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference statistical categories through four matches. Freshman forward Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.), who’s early collegiate resume has been impressive with three goals of which two were game-winners, is tied for second in goals and points (six). Junior midfielder Ben Niederhelman (Ross, Ohio) is part of a seven-way tie for first in assists (two) … Gonzalez blistered home a pair of scores, while senior defender/midfielder/forward Tod Oram (Crown Point, Ind.) tallied the first goal in a 3-1 win over traditional North Coast Athletic Conference power Wittenberg University to highlight day two of the Raven-Spartan event Sept. 9. Senior midfielder Travis Richardson(Elizabethtown, Ky.) and fellow Class of 2018 member Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.)were featured in the weekend’s first match, a 1-0 win over Blackburn University out of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Sept. 8. Richardson scored his first collegiate game-winning strike, while Forman delivered his seventh career goalkeeping clean sheet … Looking further into the Black and Gold’s statistics, junior forward Drake DeWitt (Columbia City, Ind.) leads the shots category. He has 11 total and six on goal … MU takes to the road Sunday, Sept. 17, as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team against Ohio Athletic Conference member Otterbein University. The match starts at 4 p.m. The Black and Gold returns home Tuesday, Sept. 19, for a clash with fellow OAC school Ohio Northern University.
