Cross country takes aim at Indiana Intercollegiates

Coach Geoff Lambert’s Manchester University men’s and women’s squads will compete in the Championship and Open races at the 2017 Indiana Intercollegiate Championships Friday, Sept. 15.

Meet details: Start times are 3:30 p.m. for the women’s 6K Championship; 4:15 p.m. for the men’s 8K Championship; 5 p.m. for the women’s 6K Open; and 5:45 p.m. for the men’s 8K Open … All races are set for the Purdue University Cross Country Course in West Lafayette, Ind. Spartan Shorts: Senior Alex Seeley (Hobart, Ind.) and sophomore Daniel Baker (Okemos, Mich.) return for the men as top 100 finishers in the “Little States” portion of the championships. Seeley was 83rd, and Baker wound up 100th overall at the 2016 meet hosted by Indiana University. Sophomore Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.) and senior Shelby Harrell (Plymouth, Ind.) are the top returners for the women’s program. Wappes was 10th, while Harrell was also in the top 60 a year ago at IU, placing 56th in the “Little States” section … Lambert’s crew is coming off a pair of runner-up team finishes at the season-opening MU Hokum Karem Sept. 1. Sophomores Emily Lynn (North Manchester, Ind.) and Wappes teamed up to guide the women to an 18-point outing. They clocked a combination 37:59 flat, just a second ahead of the duo of junior Samina Qureshi (Columbia City, Ind.) and freshman Hayley Musser (Oxford, Ind.) (38:00) who ended fourth. The men’s squad was led by senior Blake Harris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and sophomore Sam Barnard (Indianapolis, Ind.), taking a top 10 finish of eighth (40:56.1). Freshmen Kole Kelley (Decatur, Ind.) and Lucas Fontanez (Lowell, Ind.) were just outside the similar territory, taking 11th (41:40.7).
