Extra session thriller narrowly eludes MU

HUNTINGTON, IND. – The usually nip-and-tuck yearly series between neighboring Manchester University and Huntington University men’s soccer programs did not disappoint Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Battling through an 18-7 shots advantage for the host Foresters, senior goalkeeper Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.) proved his mettle throughout the better than 95-minute overtime thriller. He compiled eight saves with his defensive teammates coming to his aid for another to keep the scoreboard knotted throughout.

On the offensive end, junior midfielder Ben Niederhelman (Ross, Ohio) gave the visitors a lead they held for a good share of the first 45 minutes, taking an assist from freshman forward Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.) and sending it in for his eighth career goal. MU held the advantage until HU’s Miguel de Souza got a shot past Forman in the 43rd minute.

The match stayed that way to end the half and over the second 45 minutes of regulation. Just over five minutes into overtime, Matheus Louzada and Noah Stanford worked together to produce the match decider in a 2-1 final.

The Black and Gold (3-2) resume non-league action Sunday, Sept. 17. They take on Ohio Athletic Conference foe Otterbein University in a 4 p.m. kickoff at OU’s Clements Field.

NOTES: Niederhelman and Gonzalez were one-two in shot attempts. All three of the juniors were on goal, while the freshman tallied two total with one on the frame.
