First half flurry sends HU past Spartans

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Junior midfielder/forward Maranda Birmingham (Kouts, Ind.) and senior midfielder Courtney Hersick (Plymouth, Ind.) combined for seven shot attempts for the host Manchester University Spartans Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Birmingham, improving her team-best shot attempt number to 24, tallied four with one goal. Hersick ended with three and one strike on goal. However, in both instances, Huntington University net minder Paige Coolman was up to the test and knocked them away to preserve a 90-minute, three-save clean sheet.

Freshman Maddie Poe (Kokomo, Ind.) got her first start in goal for the Black and Gold. After a 40 minute, 53-second scoring barrage that saw the visitors strike for five goals, Poe settled in and didn’t allow a score a remainder of the contest. She finished with eight saves among 13 HU shot on goal attempts.

The 5-0 loss sent the Spartans to 0-6. They continue their non-conference slate Sunday, Sept. 17, traveling to Otterbein University of Ohio for a 12 p.m. start which is part of a doubleheader with the Manchester University men’s team.
