Spartan Shorts: Senior Katie Smith (Wabash, Ind.) has gotten her final collegiate season off to a flying start, posting runner-up medalist honors at Hanover and placing third at MSJ. Her stroke average of 84 per 18 holes leads the team … Freshman Kaitlyn Cook (Monticello, Ind.) has been just as impressive. She sports an 88.75-stroke average per round and harbors a top five finish at MSJ on her resume. Fellow freshman Taylor Erfman (Brookville, Ind.) also has a previous top five, tying for fifth at MSJ, and ranks fourth in stroke average (91.25), while senior Kaitlin Powers (Indianapolis, Ind.) is third low in stroke average (90.75) … Coach Tara Boone’s team’s play has gotten the attention of rankings on golfstat.com. The Spartans, the lone Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference squad noted, are No. 22 on the NCAA Division III Top Freshman list with a relative strength score of 163.158.
