TIFFIN, OHIO – Senior Katie Smith (Wabash. Ind.) carded one of three sub-80s over the final round of action at the Heidelberg University Invitational Sunday, Sept. 17.
Smith’s 79 was a 13-shot improvement from her opening round 92 on the Mohawk Golf and Country Club course Saturday, Sept. 16. She was one of five of Coach Tara Boone’s players to turn in a stronger final round 18, joining freshman Taylor Erfman (Brookville, Ind.) (90-86 – 176); freshman Kaitlyn Cook (Monticello, Ind.) (95-89 – 184); junior Haleigh Fernandez (Selma, Ind.) (99-92 – 191); and freshman Kendra Davis (Hammond, Ind.) (107-98 – 205).
The senior’s 36-hole 171 put her among the individual top 10, tying for ninth. Erfman’s second-round comeback enabled her to gain the top 20, tying for 19th.
Team-wise, Manchester University’s 30-stroke bettering from day one to day two jetted it up from ninth to sixth on the final standings (722). Their overall mark was just five strokes short of the top five.
Boone’s team continues its fall campaign Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 23 and 24. They’re on the tourney roster at the Transylvania University Invitational.
