HCAC, OAC clash on docket for MU men’s soccer

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Manchester University fans will get plenty of opportunities to see the 2017 Spartans’ men’s soccer squad on the Good Field pitch over the next two weeks beginning with Ohio Northern University’s visit Tuesday, Sept. 19.

Match details: Kickoff against the Polar Bears of the Ohio Athletic Conference is 5 p.m. … Live audio, stats and video are available via links at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics … The contest begins a stretch of three of the next four at home for MU … Coach Corey Brueggeman’s side, harboring a 3-3 record, looks to end a brief two-match skid, while ONU, coached by Brent Ridenour, sports a 4-2-1 mark. Ohio Northern has won each of the series’ previous 20 meetings, but the most recent match in North Manchester was nip-and-tuck with the Polar Bears claiming a 1-0 overtime decision in 2015.

Spartan Shorts: Five Black and Gold players have posted at least one point on the team statistics through six matches. Freshman forward Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.) is the leader in goals (three) and points (seven), while senior midfielder Travis Richardson(Elizabethtown, Ky.), junior midfielder Ben Niederhelman (Ross, Ohio) and senior forward/midfielder/defender Tod Oram (Crown Point, Ind.) all have a goal to their credit. Niederhelman is the assist leader (two), while Gonzalez and junior midfielder Josh McCoy(LaPorte, Ind.) has dished out one each … Manchester University wrapped up a two-match road swing Sept. 17 with a 2-0 loss at the hands of fellow Ohio Athletic Conference foe Otterbein. Senior goalkeeper Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.) stood on his head over the course of the first half to ensure a scoreless tie, but the home team finally broke through twice in the second stanza in route to the win. The senior ended with 11 saves, marking his third collegiate double-digit total. Freshman midfielder Nick Surber (Hebron, Ind.)registered the Spartans’ lone shot attempt … A quick check of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference statistical rankings shows three Black and Gold players listed among the top five. Gonzalez is tied for third in points; Niederhelman’s two assists are also tied for third; and Forman’s 37 saves are third best, also … Following the clash with Ohio Northern, Manchester University welcomes in-state non-conference rival DePauw University to Good Field Sunday, Sept. 24, for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
