A pair of in-state non-conference foes lock up at Manchester University’s Good Field Sunday, Sept. 24.
Match details: Kickoff is 3 p.m., as the Spartans (3-4) host DePauw University out of the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Tigers take a 3-2-1 record into a league contest at Wooster College of Ohio Saturday, Sept. 23 … Live audio, stats and video can be accessed via links at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics … It’s the first meeting in the series since 1997.
Spartan Shorts: MU began a two-match home stand Sept. 20, pushing Ohio Athletic Conference power Ohio Northern to the limit before falling 1-0. Senior goalkeeper Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.) repelled six Polar Bear attempts at the home team net over the first 45 minutes to keep the score knotted at zero. The Good Field scoreboard remained clean in the second stanza, too, until the visitors broke the deadlock in the 70th minute. MU pushed hard for the equalizer over the final 19-plus minutes with the best try coming from junior midfielder Nate Johnson (Portage, Ind.). He got a ball inside the box in front of Ohio Northern’s net and hit a bullet that struck the left post and rattled out. The Spartans finished with three individuals tallying two-or-more shot chances. Freshman forward Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.) led the way with three, and senior midfielder Travis Richardson (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and junior midfielder Samuel Tetteh-Quarshie (Accra, Ghana) adding two apiece … Forman goes into the weekend ranked in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s top five in total saves (44) and save percentage (80). Gonzalez also holds court in similar territory, ranking in a tie for second in goals (three) and a tie for fourth in points (seven) and shots (15), while junior midfielder Ben Niederhelman’s (Ross, Ohio) two assists are also among the top five efforts … Sunday’s showdown with DePauw continues a robust non-conference schedule for Coach Corey Brueggeman’s side. They’ve faced three teams (UW-Whitewater, Otterbein, Ohio Northern) either ranked or receiving votes in their respective United Soccer Coaches regional polls and have another in front of them Tuesday, Sept. 26, when they take an eastern trek to Heidelberg University of Ohio.
