The Northfield football team had a lot riding on Friday’s game against Rochester. The Zebras were coming in undefeated and challenging the Norse for the TRC North lead. The winner would take sole possession of first place as the Norse put the Zebras in their place with a 29-0 whipping.
The game got started with a flurry of turnovers as the Zebras fumbled on their second play with Michael Ford recovering. Rochester however would get the ball back on Northfield first play when they picked off a Levi Fulkerson pass. One play later Kyle Reed would recover a fumble and the Norse would capitalize this time. Starting on the Rochester 17yl, Reed would carry to the 6yl before Matt Coe scored on the next play for a 7-0 lead with 9:10 on the clock. The remainder of the quarter would be a battle of field position as the Norse led 7-0 after one.
After a Kade Kennedy interception ended the first quarter the Norse would go to their running game, chewing up yards until Fulkerson found Graydon Craig up the middle for a 21yd scoring strike to lead 14-0 which was the halftime score.
The Norse would get the ball first to start the third quarter, again marching down the field but being stopped on 4th and goal at the 2yd line. What ended up not being a touchdown turned into a safely to make it 16-0. On the insuing kick off John Schuler would put the Norse in striking distance, running the kick back to the Rochester 15. With 4:26 on the clock Fulkerson would run it in from 4yds out as the lead grew to 22-0. Rochester looked as though they might score before the end of the quarter when their running back broke loose down the right sideline before Cole Rosen ran him down at the 24.
After the Rosen save the Norse defense would stop the Zebras early in the fourth and make another big stop later in the quarter. On Northfield’s last possession Schuler would run 45yds to the Zebra 16 before Fulkerson score from a yard out for the 29-0 final.
