Spartan Shorts: What head coach Corey Brueggeman sees as a “confidence booster” moving forward for his side came in the form of a 1-0 win over North Coast Athletic Conference power DePauw University Sept. 24 at Good Field. Junior forward Drake DeWitt (Columbia City, Ind.) smashed a shot in the box that ricocheted off a teammate and found its way past the out-stretched arms of DePauw University goalkeeper Austin Bodner in the 66th minute. His first goal of the season proved to be a game-winner as senior goalkeeper Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.) repelled the Tigers’ lone shot on goal try in the 90 minutes in route to his fourth clean sheet of the season. The win was the first in 13 tries against the in-state non-league foe … Forman’s defensive prowess hasn’t gone unnoticed in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. He’s fifth in save percentage (80.4) and third in saves (45). Freshman forward Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.) has made a habit of crashing the league’s offensive statistics top 10, as he’s tied for eighth in goals (three), tied for 10th in points (seven) and sixth in shots (17). His upperclassman teammate, junior midfielder Ben Niederhelman (Ross, Ohio) is also among a top 10, sitting tied for seventh in assists (two).

HCAC Opener: Traditional loop power Hanover College comes to Good Field Saturday, Sept. 30.
