Derby City Dust-Up – Louisville Classic next step for MU

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Manchester University continues to ready itself towards the 2017 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships by competing in the Louisville Sports Commission Cross Country Classic Saturday, Sept. 30.

Meet details: Coach Geoff Lambert’s teams are entered in the Silver races scheduled at 12 p.m. for the men and 12:45 p.m. for the women … E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park is the host site. There is a $5 admission charge to watch the races … MU finished 10th in the women’s team standings and 16th on the men’s chart a year ago. Sophomore Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.) (70th) and senior Blake Harris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) (175th) are the highest finishing individual returners.

Spartan Shorts: It’s the third competition of the season for the Black and Gold. The men’s and women’s squads both earned runner-up efforts at the home Hokum Karem event in late August and came back earlier this month to post seventh (men) and eighth (women) place marks at the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships Little States section at West Lafayette … Harris and Wappes lead individual marks to date. Harris is coming off a stellar runner-up effort at the Indiana Little State race, while Wappes ended third in her section. They were both in the top pairings at the Hokum Karem, as Harris joined sophomore Sam Barnard (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Wappes was partnered with sophomore Emily Lynn (North Manchester, Ind.) … Harris’ finish Sept. 15 was the third time he’s raced to a collegiate top 10. Wappes’ crossing totaled a similar number for her Spartans’ career … A trio of runners hope to take their strong performances at the Indiana Little States a step further. Junior Samina Qureshi (Columbia City, Ind.) placed in the top 25, while freshmen Lucas Fontanez (Lowell, Ind.) and Keyen Taulbee (Michigantown, Ind.) were just off that pace at the Purdue University course.

Interregional Glance: Manchester University is among the men’s and women’s team fields for Oberlin College of Ohio’s annual races Saturday, Oct. 14.
