Lady Knights Stop Manchester In Four

The Southwood volleyball team played host to Manchester in another county rival match Thursday with the Lady Knights winning 27-25, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20.

The Knights would get early kills from Drue Gentry and Allisa Pershing while the Squires answered with Anna Osborne and Sydney Day with the Squires leading 10-7. Haley Bland would then serve an ace to ignite a 4-1 run by Southwood as the game was tied 11-11. Back came the Squires with a 4-0 run to go up 14-12 before the Knights answered with a 5-0 run to lead 17-14.The two teams would trade leadsĀ  three more times and were tied 25-25 when Erin Lehner recorded back to back kills to give the Knights game one 27-25.

Manchester would jump out to a 6-1 lead in game two off kills from Kara Kline, Day and Osborne and stretched the lead to 11-4 before a kill from Gentry started a 5-0 run for the Knights to make it 11-9. With the Squires leading 13-10 Manchester would find Day and score five straight to take an 18-10 lead and led 20-11 when Southwood scored six straight to make it 20-17. Manchester led 22-21 before taking advantage of two Knight errors and getting another kill from Day to win game two 25-21.

Southwood jumped out to a 4-1 lead in game three and were leading 12-10 when a fire was lit. Kayla Mays would bomb a kill, followed by Pershing to extend their lead to 16-10, then go on a 7-0 run for a 23-12 lead. Pershing would kill for the final point as Southwood won game three 25-15.

The Squires looked like they were going to bounce back in game four as Day went to work as Manchester was up 12-7 when the Knights got hot again. With Pershing dominating at the net and Kelsey Niccum serving the Knights would go on a 9-0 run to grab a 16-12 lead. A miscue would stop the run before Manchester got two aces from Emma West to make it 16-15. For the next several points it would be Pershing and Day doing battle at the net with Southwood leading 23-20 before Mays and Allison Steele ended the night with kills 25-20
