Balanced Attack Leads Knights Past Peru

The Southwood Knights used a balanced attack Friday, scoring four times in the air and three times on the ground as they defeated Peru 55-28.

The Knights led just 7-0 after the first quarter. With 40 seconds left in the first Carson Blair found Peyton Trexler from 73yds out for the lead.

The Tigers would get the first score of the second quarter when Gavin Gysin ran for 57yds to the 2 before Darien Cleaver ran it in to make it 7-6. With 5:33 left in the half Gabe Lloyd would find the end zone from 1yd out after the Knights had recovered a fumble to lead 14-6. The Southwood defense would then force another fumble before Blair and Trexler hooked up for a second time to increase their lead to 21-6. The Knights would then get an interception from Trexler to set up the third connection with Blair from 4yds out to lead 28-6 with 2:08 on the clock. The last score of the half came from Southwood kicker Parker Mays who split the uprights from 39yds out as the Knights led 31-6 at the half.

Again Peru would score first in a quarter, getting on the board on a 39yd Gysin run with 9:51 left to make it 31-14. The Tigers would then recover an onside kick before turning the ball over on downs. The first offensive play after the defensive stop from the Knights was a Lloyd 67yd touchdown run with 8:06 on the clock to grab a 38-14 lead. With 5:41 left Mays would connect for a second time, this time from 37yds out to make it 41-14. The Tigers would come right back, pounding ground yardage that was capped off by a Jordan Rader 2yd run with 1:41 on the clock to make it 41-22. The Knights would score one more time before the buzzer when Blair scored on an option keeper from 39yds out to give Southwood a 48-22 lead with a quarter to go.

Peru would go to the air in the fourth and with 6:08 left Robert Cunningham would find Gysin from 25yds out to make it 48-28. The Knights would score two minutes later when Blair hooked up with Matt Nose from 14yds out for a 55-28 score.
