Coach Eric Christiansen’s side aims at one of the two remaining Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference unbeaten Saturday, Oct. 7.
Dual details: First serve between the Spartans (3-2 overall, 3-1 HCAC) and Hanover College (3-2 overall, 3-0 HCAC) is 12 p.m. at Zeddies Tennis Center on HC’s campus.
Spartan Shorts: MU saw its perfect league start dashed at Franklin College Sept. 30 in a 7-2 final that was much closer than the score indicated. Senior Erin Cordill (Zionsville, Ind.)helped account for both points. She rolled past Karen Dringenburg 6-3, 6-1 in singles and then joined fellow senior Mariam Ali (Giza, Egypt) in slipping past Drigenburg and Rachel Rose 9-7. Senior Katie Peden (North Manchester, Ind.) pushed Alexis Schofner to a superbreak at number four singles but was stopped 10-5. Fellow Class of 2018 member Katy Ashpole (Leesburg, Ind.), who was looking to stay undefeated in singles and doubles, rebounded from a 6-3 first set loss to Lilly Bushong at number six with five game wins in set two but was topped 7-5. A 2-1 doubles edge for the home side was anything but easy, too, as Bushong and teammate Megan Battles snuck past the freshman duo of Karly Eichenauer (North Manchester, Ind.) and Avis McGovern (North Vernon, Ind.) 9-7 … Saturday’s clash with the Panthers could be just as nip and tuck. Ashpole, Cordill, and Eichenauer each have four singles wins to their credit, as Cordill is unbeaten in conference action (4-0) followed closely by Ali, Ashpole, and Eichenauer who are each 3-1 against the league. MU’s doubles pairings have similar resumes with Ali and Cordill standing 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference; Ashpole and Peden sporting a 5-1 record which includes a 3-1 loop mark, and Eichenauer and McGovern being over .500 overall (3-2) and 3-1 versus the HCAC.
Back Home: The Spartans’ Homecoming Week 2017 schedule begins Thursday, Oct. 12, with Rose-Hulman coming to North Manchester for a 3 p.m. start.
