Weekend matinees resume home stand

Manchester University looks to break away from a recent skid of back-to-back Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference defeats Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 7 and 8.

Match details: The Spartans (8-6 overall, 1-2 league) host Hanover College Saturday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m. and Transylvania University Sunday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena … Live audio, stats, and video for both matches are accessible via links at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics … Hanover College, MU’s Saturday guest, is 14-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference. TU sported 10-7 overall and 0-2 HCAC marks before hitting the road for back-to-back road tests that begin at Anderson University Saturday, Oct. 7.

Spartan Shorts: Junior right side hitter Haley Duncan (Albion, Ind.) and sophomore outside hitter Emma DeWitt (Brookston, Ind.) each wound up in kill double digits to lead Manchester University last weekend. Duncan finished with 15 as part of an afternoon in which she compiled a respectable .235 attack percentage and put up five total blocks. DeWitt added 10 to go with two service aces and eight digs to her final stat line … Coach Bryndon Paulsen’s team had plenty to cheer about early against the Quakers, registering a high .212 attack percentage in the first set and then coming back to be better than 150 in the second game in route to 25-21, 25-22 wins. From that point, a gritty Earlham College crew battled for points at each turn and limited Manchester University’s offense to .105 and .091 attack percentages to tie the match behind a pair of 25-20 victories in the third and fourth sets. The fifth game proved to be a white knuckler. The Spartans trailed 12-9 before reeling off three in a row for a 12-12 tie with momentum seemingly on their side. However, Earlham responded with three in a row of their own for the 15-12 victory and 3-2 match triumph … Duncan and DeWitt are one-two for the Black and Gold in kills at 120 and 111, respectively. Junior middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) is closing in on becoming the third member of this season’s triple-digit club, needing only six more, while senior outside hitter Ally Roskos (Elkhart, Ind.) is also within range (84). Duncan’s also the squad leader in blocks (24), while other team statistical firsts belong to sophomore defensive specialist/libero Anna Marie Lawrie (Indianapolis, Ind.) (176 digs); sophomore middle hitter Riley Patterson (Walkerton, Ind.) (.325 attack percentage); freshman setter Lauren Gandhi (Westfield, Ind.) (23 service aces); and junior setter Dakota Stanichuk(Indianapolis, Ind.) (210 assists) … Gandhi and Patterson’s numbers translate well onto the conference’s rankings. Patterson’s attack percentage is third-highest, while Gandhi’s 0.55 service aces per set rank fourth … Hanover has taken over the series history due to a 14-match win streak. The Spartans’ last decision over the Panthers occurred in 2002. Manchester University stopped an eight-match loss string to Transylvania previously, winning in four sets in Lexington.

Anderson Arrival: The two HCAC rivals match up Wednesday, Oct. 11, to help highlight MU’s Homecoming 2017 Week festivities. First serve is 7 p.m.
