Spartan Shorts: A home and away week began Oct. 4 for the Black and Gold, as rival Anderson University posted a pair of scores in the first and second halves to gain a 4-0 victory at Good Field. A fourth double-digit save total for junior goalkeeper Cami Holford (Valparaiso, Ind.) kept Manchester University within range. Holford, posting 11 saves in the midst of a 30-6 shots advantage for the visiting Ravens, was nicked early by the hard-charging AU offense by two scores in the first 10 and a half minutes. However, she and the defensive back line stiffened until the latter stages of the second half, while senior midfielder Courtney Hersick (Plymouth, Ind.) and freshman defender/midfielder Gwendolyn Fourman (South Bend, Ind.) managed to rattle the opposing net to the tune of three shots on goal that were each averted by visiting net minder Allyson Saylor … With Wednesday’s total included, Holford finds herself second on the HCAC statistical charts in saves (64), trailing only Earlham College’s Sari Stissi. Junior midfielder/forward Maranda Birmingham(Kouts, Ind.) is just outside the top five in total shots with her 34 strikes tied for sixth … Recent series history is .500 between the two programs, as both sides have won twice in the past four meetings … Following Saturday’s clash with the Fightin’ Engineers, the Spartans are on the road again Wednesday, Oct. 11, for a 7:30 p.m. start at Franklin College.
