Rose-Hulman rally sidesteps Spartans

TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Junior midfielder/forward Maranda Birmingham (Kouts, Ind.) kept a recent strong form of play going, netting her second goal in the last three Manchester University matches, and junior goalkeeper Cami Holford (Valparaiso, Ind.) tacked on her fifth double-digit save effort of the season Saturday, Oct. 7.

Birmingham’s successful strike, aided by senior midfielder Courtney Hersick (Plymouth, Ind.), broke open a scoreless tie right off the second half whistle at Rose-Hulman’s Jim Rendel and Intramural Fields. After being stonewalled by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference second-highest saves aggregator over the first 45 minutes to the tune of six Holford knockaways, the Fightin’ Engineers managed to erase the zero on their part of the scoreboard with two key scores in a span of a minute and a half from the 57th to 58th in route to a 3-1 decision.

Birmingham’s three total shot tries, two of which were on goal, led nine attempts by the Black and Gold (0-11, 0-3 HCAC). Hersick, senior midfielder Kelsey Ropp (Freeland, Mich.) and sophomore midfielder/forward Katie Green (Chesterton, Ind.) added two each.

Manchester University continues a current two-match road trip Wednesday, Oct. 11. Kickoff at Franklin College is 7:30 p.m.
