The Northfield and Southwood volleyball teams opened the Southwood sectional with a county rivalry game Thursday with the Lady Norse holding off the Knights 26-24, 25-23, 26-24.
With both teams having some early jitters the score would bounce back and forth with each team taking advantage of the others mistakes with Northfield leading 8-7 when Southwood made a move. Drue Gentry would record a kill that started a 7-0 run to put the Knights up 14-8. Kalya Mays had two kills during the run with Allison Steele adding and ace a a tip for a point. The Knights would keep their foot on the gas and led 21-12 when Northfield slammed on the brakes. Kenzie Baer and Addi Baker would then take control at the net, recording three kills each as the Norse made a 14-3 run to take game one 26-24.
Ava Smith served an ace to start game two with the Norse jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Alissa Pershing got busy with two kills as the Knights ripped off 6 straight to go up 9-4. Back came the Norse, getting an ace from Baer and a kill from Baker to tie the game at 9. Southwood would then find Mays and Maggie Ball to lead 15-12 before the Norse went to Kyra Kennedy and came back to take a 17-16 lead. The two teams would punch and counter punch the remainder of the game as Northfield held on 25-23 and led 2-0.
Game three was tight early and featured two major runs to cap it off. Southwood led 15-11 when the Norse took advantage of some long balls by the Knights, plus got two blocks from Kierston Stout to score 8 straight and grab a 19-15 lead. Northfield would build their lead to 22-16 when the Knights made a run. Maggie Ball would get a block that started an 8-2 run, aided by three kills from Mays and two from Erin Lehner by the Knights to tie the score at 24 before Addi Baker drove home two kills for the Northfield 26-24 win.
