High Note – Spartans wind up fourth-place HCAC finish

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – An essential pair of doubles decisions proved to be the difference in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference dual Saturday, Oct. 14.

Seniors Erin Cordill (Zionsville, Ind.) and Mariam Ali (Giza, Egypt) rolled past Lillian Williams and Mary Grace Amato 8-3, and another senior tandem of Katy Ashpole (Leesburg, Ind.) and Katie Peden (North Manchester, Ind.) slipped past the Pioneers’ Kearstin Bruther and Lucy Herrington 9-7 to nail down a 2-1 lead going into singles. From that point, Cordill, winding up a perfect run through the loop at number one, was a straight-set victory over Amato, and Ashpole improved to 6-2 overall with a similar result at number six to clinch a hard-fought 5-4 win at MU’s outdoor courts.

Coach Eric Christiansen’s side locked up the number four seed in next weekend’s HCAC Championships tournament. MU faces a rematch against Transylvania Friday, Oct. 20, at 6:30 p.m. in one of two quarterfinals for the 20127 HCAC Championships at West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis, Ind. The winner advances to face top-seeded Hanover College in a semifinal Saturday, Oct. 21.
