Spartans begin two in row on road

Fresh off a thrilling 28-21 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Bluffton University Oct. 21, Manchester University faces a trip to Earlham College Saturday, Oct. 28.

Burt Memorial Field in North Manchester last fall.

Spartan Shorts: Three statistical categories rank among the league’s top five for the Black and Gold through seven games. Sophomore Donovan Henderson, Jr. (Hollywood, Fla.)remains one of the top rushers, leading the way in ground scores (seven) and sitting third in yards per game (78.3). Senior linebacker Jack Kay (Williamsport, Ind.) has jetted up to fifth in tackles per game (8.4) due to averaging 11 tackles per contest in his last two appearances … The Black and Gold continue rank high on NCAA Division III lists, too. Senior Dakota Nelson (Fairland, Ind.) is tied for the national lead in kickoff return touchdowns (two), is second in combined kick return yardage (826) and stands fifth in all-purpose yards per game (189.57). He holds a fourth top 10 nationally in kickoff return yardage average (No. 8 – 30.4). Henderson (No. 60 – rushing touchdowns) and Kay (No. 52 – forced fumbles – .29 per game) join their teammate in the first 60s … Henderson’s rise up the league and national numbers is due to finding the end zone in five of the seven games this season including multiple-touchdown carries against Bluffton and Alma. He’s also harboring a roll of three successive contests in which he’s totaled 75-or-more yards … Sophomore quarterback Alex Downard (Indianapolis, Ind.) aims to remain as consistent as his backfield classmate. He’s thrown for 100-or-more yards in eight of his last nine appearances dating back to his freshman campaign … Kay’s in similar territory in regards to tackles. He’s registered seven contests of 10-or-more over his junior and senior years.
