Spartans run win streak to five

BLUFFTON, OHIO – Balance and plenty of it ensured Manchester University’s late season win streak would continue Wednesday, Oct. 25.

The Spartans, moving to 9-8 overall and 5-3 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, received scores from five different players and out-shot the host Bluffton University Beavers 26-3 as part of a 5-0 victory, marking their fifth straight. MU’s decision was made that much better when news trickled in of an Anderson University loss to Defiance College that put the Black and Gold in fourth place, three points ahead of their league rivals with one match to go.

Coach Corey Brueggeman’s squad turned to a new source to break up a scoreless tie in the 20th minute, as sophomore defender Brandon Renninger (Fort Wayne, Ind.) took a break from leading what’s been a nearly impenetrable back line to a role of scorer, firing a shot into the home net off an assist from sophomore midfielder Alex Baker (Fort Wayne, Ind.). His first collegiate goal would later become his first collegiate game winner as junior midfielders Nate Johnson (Portage, Ind.) and Josh McCoy (LaPorte, Ind.) and senior midfielders Travis Richardson (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and Luke Headings (Bluffton, Ohio) added to the offensive roll. Meanwhile, Renninger aided the defense and senior net minder Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.) in a 90-minute clean sheet, the fourth in the last five contests and seventh of the season, in which the keeper registered a save.

Manchester University wraps up its home and regular season Saturday, Oct. 28. Earlham College is the Spartans’ guest for a 3:30 p.m. start which highlights Senior Day 2017 festivities.
