After losing their entire starting five and their coach from last season the Southwood Lady Knights opened the 2017-18 season with a win Wednesday, defeating Blackford 47-30.
Using a high pressure defense the Knights would overcome a slow offensive start to the game. Alissa Pershing would get the first bucket of the season off an offensive rebound and was followed by a Kayla Mays buckets and buckets from Morgan Farr and Erin Lehner to lead 8-0 after the first quarter.
Southwood would get early buckets in the second quarter from Farr and Lehner to build their lead to 12-2 and led 15-5 when Makayla Bechtold drained a three to make it 18-5. The Knights got one more bucket from Lehner to lead 19-7 at the half.
Blackford would out score Southwood 9-2 early in the third with the lone bucket coming from Keagan Simpson off a steal. The Knights led 21-16 when Sydney Helfin hit back to back buckets, then got buckets from Kayla Mays and Lehner to end the quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 29-16 with a quarter to go.
The Knights would go to Pershing and Mays early in the fourth before MaKenna Pace got hot, scoring 8 points in the quarter as Southwood rolled to a 47-30 opening night win.

The Southwood junior varsity fell to Blackford 24-20 in overtime.
