Freshman men’s soccer student-athlete Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.) highlighted five Spartans on the 2017 all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honor teams, released Nov. 9.
Gonzalez, tabbed Freshman of the Year, finished his first season in a Black and Gold uniform with 14 points due to four goals and six assists. He ended the year ranked among the league’s top 10 in points (No. 10) and assists (No. 4) in leading Coach Corey Brueggeman’s program to its first league postseason tourney berth since 2010 and first double-digit win slate since 2007. Gonzalez is the third from MU to earn top first-year accolades joining Brian Woods (2006) and Chris Rowe (2005).
He was joined on the top two squads by junior midfielder Drake DeWitt (Columbia City, Ind.) and sophomore defender Brandon Renninger (Fort Wayne, Ind.). DeWitt produced three goals, four assists, and 10 points to go along with 47 total shots, second only to Gonzalez’ 62 on the team. Renninger, picking up his second loop postseason award, proved to be one of the HCAC and region’s best defensively throughout the season, playing a pivotal role in allowing the back line to be part of eight shutout wins.
Senior goalkeeper Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.) earned honorable mention accolades after winning ten victories in the net behind a 1.05 goals-against average. Sophomore defender Matthew Roop (West Lafayette, Ind.) was the team’s Sportsmanship honoree.
