The Southwood Knights traveled to Monroe Central Friday to battle for a regional crown and led the entire game before giving up a touchdown with 5.3 seconds left, falling 28-21.
The Knights defense would do their job on the first Monroe Central possession, making the stop and giving the ball to the potent Southwood offense which wasted to time getting on the board. Carson Blair would hit Peyton Trexler on a middle crossing pass with Trexler breaking free for a 78yd scoring strike and a 7-0 lead with 5:40 on the clock. The remainder of the quarter and the entire second quarter was a battle of field possession with both defenses dominating play. Monroe Central had a shot at tying the score right before the half when they had the ball on the Southwood 13 yard line, but once again the defense stepped up to make the stop and the Knights led 7-0 at the half.
The defenses continued to control play in the third before Monroe Central found pay dirt on a 68yd scoring pass with 3:58 on the clock. Matt Nose would knock down the two point conversion attempt as the Knights clung to a 7-6 lead. The Knights would fumble the ensuing kick off with Monroe Central recovering, forcing the defense to hold again. Southwood led 7-6 after three.
The defensive stop came with 11:21 left in the game when Trexler picked off a pass and raced 54yds for a touchdown and a 14-6 lead. Monroe Central would come right back, scoring through the air with 9:36 left and converted the two point conversion for a 14-14 tie. With the host playing all out pass defense Carson Blair would find Matt Nose in the back of the endzone with 7:36 left in the game and after the Parker Mays kick the Knights led 21-14. The Knights would kick off with Monroe Central responding on their first play with a 90yd pass play with 7:13 left, but the two point conversion failed and the Knights were up 21-20. The two teams would trade blows with neither being able to cross the goal line until the final possession of the night. Monroe Central had the ball with no time outs left and went to the air, marching down the field before the Knights defense had them 4th & 15 on the 18 when Monroe Central went for it all, scoring with 5.3 on the clock to pull off the 28-21 upset.
