The Manchester girls basketball team played their home opener Tuesday, hosting Maconaquah. The Lady Squires built an early lead and survived a third quarter run from the Braves to defeat Maconaquah 47-26.
Manchester would jump out to a 7-0 lead with free throws from Erika Kendall and Sydney Day, plus a three pointer from Kennedy Fierstos before Syenna Powell stopped the Squires run with a free throw. Ashley Jess would hit a three to make it 9-4 when Kiera Hatfield hit a free throw followed by another Fierstos three to make it 13-4. Jess would answer with a three for a 13-7 score before a Day bucket plus a Fierstos free throw and a bucket made it 18-7 after one.
Fierstos would hit her third three to start the second quarter and was followed by a bucket from Kennidy Lauer as the Manchester lead grew to 24-7. Jolee Holland would the hit two straight for the Braves to make it 24-12 before another Fierstos three, her fourth of the half. Manchester would get buckets from Lauer, Kendall and Eva Bazzoni to end the half with a 33-13 lead.
Sydney Day would get the first bucket of the second half before the Braves made a run. Maconaquah would score 11 straight points with 7 of the coming from Powell to make it 34-24. Manchester would finish the scoring in the quarter with a three from Kerigan Hatfield and a bucket from Day to lead 39-24 after three.
The first points of the fourth quarter did not come until 3:55 left in the game when Emma West hit. Kiera hatfield would then hit two in a row before a Kendall bucket made it 47-24 as Manchester went on to a 47-26 win.
