MU rallies past Adrian, evens dual record

ADRIAN, MICH. – An interregional dual match-up between Manchester University and Adrian College gave fans in attendance at AC’s Merillat Sports and Fitness Center their money’s worth and more Thursday, Nov. 16.

The Spartans and Bulldogs each won five of the 10 contested bouts on the mat with the final outcome going down to bonus-point victories. MU, improving to 1-1 on the young season, reeled off two major decisions, a fall, a forfeit and technical fall compared to the hosts two pins for a four-point margin at night’s end by a 25-21 count.

Coach Kevin Lake and his staff leaned on their lower weights to decide the victory. Freshman 125-pounder Josh Stephenson (Yorktown, Ind.) got the roll started by receiving a forfeit and junior 133-pounder Ben Cauffman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) produced 19 points in seven minutes in route to a technical fall to cut a once 21-8 deficit to 21-19 with one match remaining. As the tension built, sophomore 141-pounder JaVon Phillips (Centerville, Ind.) stepped up and got the deciding pin in 3:55.

MU’s evening began with a flurry. Senior 149-pounder Chase Wilson (Peru, Ind.) proved his recent top contender status on, roaring past Noah Nieman 21-7, and sophomore 157-pounder Jordan Napier (Indianapolis, Ind.) gained a wild 20-11 major decision, putting the Black and Gold up 8-0. From there, the home team scored 21 unanswered behind two pins and three decisions.

Lake’s squad breaks from competition next weekend due to the Thanksgiving holiday. They return to the mat Saturday, Dec. 2, hosting the 2017 Indiana Little State Championships.
