Apaches Give #1 A Scare

The Wabash Apaches opened their season Wednesday on the road at 2A, #1 Oak Hill Wednesday, scaring the daylights of the Eagles as the game was tied with 2:00 left before Oak Hill hit 8 free throws the last 1:57 to top the Apaches 67-57.

Wabash would jump out to a quick 3-0 lead on a Luke Mattern bomb before Oak Hill scored 8 straight for an 8-3 lead. Austin Vinopal made it 8-5 before the Eagles lead grew back to 12-5. The Apaches would then silence the home crowd, getting a bucket from Mattern that ignited a 14-0 Wabash run to end the quarter. During the run Trenton Daughtry and Logan Vander Velden would each hit with Elijah Vander Velden hitting right before the buzzer. Wabash led 19-12 after one.

Logan Vander Velden would get the first bucket of the second quarter before Jared Holley made it 23-15. Oak Hill would cut the Wabash lead to 28-25 before two Mattern free throws made it 30-25. At 20-27 Vander Velden would hit a free throw as the Apaches held on and led 31-30 at the half.

Mattern would hit a three to start the third quarter and give Wabash a 34-30 lead and led 37-33 after a Dereck Vogel three when Oak Hill scored 9 of the next 11 points to go up 42-39. It was gut check for the Apaches as they had given up the lead for the first time since the first quarter and they answered the call. Mattern would hit two free throws and was followed by a Trenton Daughtry free throw. Jared Holley and Daughtry then scored back to back buckets as Wabash led 47-42 after three.

Wabash led 49-44 early in the fourth when the Eagles went on a 11-3 run to grab a 55-52 lead before Mattern tied the score with a bomb. The game was tied 57-57 with 2:00 left when Oak Hill converted a three point play, forcing the Apaches to play the foul game with Oak Hill hitting 6 the last 43 seconds to seal the 67-57 final.
